At the heart of the song is someone who has become accustomed to keeping people at arm’s length. Years of shallow connections and carefully guarded emotions have created a strange kind of safety: if nobody gets close enough, nobody can see what is really happening underneath. Much of the song’s imagery reflects that struggle. Paper-thin walls, buried roots, sharpened shadows, and messages left unread all suggest someone who desperately wants connection while simultaneously being afraid of it.
