Have you ever kept yourself busy just to avoid thinking about something you knew you needed to face? Farline take that instinct somewhere darker on Running Blind, following a character who keeps moving while the consequences of his own behaviour remain close behind.
There is an interesting distinction in the lyrics between feeling haunted and accepting responsibility. The narrator describes fear, pain, and a mind that offers little escape, but the song keeps bringing the focus back to what this person has actually done. Sympathy never erases the damage.
“Make yourself a victim, take a look at what you have done” cuts straight through the excuses. It is the moment where the writing refuses to let discomfort become an alibi. Feeling terrible about your past means very little if you keep finding ways to avoid changing.
Farline describe urgent guitar work, a driving rhythm section, and a large melodic chorus, giving the song a musical direction that suits its constant sense of pursuit. The contrast is appealing: a chorus built for singing along carries words about memories you would rather silence.
The track also comes with a history worth knowing. Originally written during the band’s early 1990s chapter, it was revisited after their reunion more than thirty years later. A song about the past catching up has itself travelled a considerable distance to reach this recording.
Guitarist and songwriter Mike Wright produced the track, with mixing by Tom Lord-Alge. The band’s stated combination of classic melodic rock and a contemporary cinematic approach gives that older material a clear direction for its return.
Running Blind has a compelling subject beneath its energetic presentation. Farline keep asking the question their character wants to avoid: when does running stop being an escape and become the thing keeping you trapped? That unresolved pressure gives the song’s central idea plenty of staying power.
