Have you ever gone from checking your phone every five minutes to hoping that same person never texts you again? BRENNA gets that switch on Way It Goes, and the lyrics have absolutely no interest in pretending the whole situation is graceful. There is attraction, boredom, exhaustion, and the moment you mentally pack somebody’s bags before they have even picked their clothes up. Messy? Definitely. Familiar? A little too familiar.
The opening puts us inside a mind that will not settle down. Being wired and tired at once is bad enough, but watching your own life like a passenger adds another uncomfortable layer. Then “you’re fired” cuts through it with a wonderfully blunt change of mood. You can practically picture the clothes getting pointed toward the door.
“First I get obsessed / Then I’m unimpressed” is the line that makes the whole cycle click. BRENNA admits to the pattern instead of dressing it up as empowerment. That honesty makes the attitude more interesting, especially when the second verse explains what sits beneath the indifference. Getting hurt has made emotional distance feel safer than trying again.
“I don’t get violent I get radio silent” deserves attention, too. It is sharp, memorable writing, but the later reference to no longer feeling human gives that shutdown a sadder edge. You can enjoy the dismissal while recognising how much feeling had to disappear to make it possible.
The independently written and produced track is described as bringing detuned metal riffs together with intimate electronic pop vocals, rap, and screams. That combination makes sense for a narrator bouncing between overstimulation and emotional withdrawal. The appeal is in letting sweetness, bite, and heaviness share the same space.
Way It Goes gives you plenty to latch onto, especially that combustible chorus. Put it on when your patience has expired and somebody still thinks there is a conversation left to have.
